Views sought on latest Cherwell Street proposals

Feedback from an earlier consultation has fed into the latest designs
A new consultation has begun into a proposed redesign of the road layout on Cherwell Street in Banbury in the area between the George Street and Bridge Street junctions.
Oxfordshire County Council has been awarded government funding for the scheme, which proposes changes to bus priority and traffic lane allocations, along with improving traffic signals and pedestrian crossings.
Views are being sought on the plans and improvements to bus journey times and reliability.

The latest designs have been put together following an earlier consultation last spring. The most recent changes include an extended “turn left” lane on Cherwell Street northbound and a widened bus lane from George Street onto Cherwell Street.
Councillor Judy Roberts, Oxfordshire County Council’s Cabinet Member for Infrastructure and Development Strategy, said: “The Cherwell Street area of Banbury is very congested, especially at peak times. As a result, bus journeys are often delayed. We are proposing a set of improvements to make bus journeys into and out of central Banbury more reliable and so more attractive.

“Pedestrians and cyclists are also put at risk by sub-standard crossings and the number of vehicles travelling through this area. The proposed changes aim to improve safety for those who walk, cycle or wheel through central Banbury.
“This consultation is an opportunity for those who travel through this area to feedback on the improvements and help us to decide on their final design.”
The public are invited to view the proposals at an information event being held on Monday March 10 at Banbury Town Hall.
The consultation is open until March 23.

I agree that improvement is needed, though I can see some of the improvements leading to more congestion at peak times. For example, removing the filter lane to traffic turning right onto market place may work but if this means that traffic turning right has to wait for a gap in traffic to turn right, this will cause extra congestion. I cannot see the removal of that third lane for vehicles turning right into market place working. Asking people to place their views here is not enough, we need a general meeting for people to speak as the general plan is not clear enough on full intentions, light timings and traffic management are not really clear
