Warning for train users as Storm Goretti moves in

08/01/2026

Sleety snow, rain and strong winds are anticipated overnight

Rail users hoping to catch a train from Banbury station tomorrow (Friday) are being warned of a severely reduced service due to Storm Goretti.

Chiltern Railways will only be running 50 percent of their normal timetable and they caution services may be subject to disruption due to the weather this evening.   King Sutton station will not be served at all on Friday.

Tony Baxter, Operations Director at Chiltern Railways, said: “I urge our customers to stay safe as Storm Goretti will cause significant disruption to our network on Friday.   Please consider changing your travel plans where possible on Friday as a significantly reduced service will be in operation, and trains which are running are likely to be busier.”

Cross Country have also cancelled a number of their Banbury services between Bournemouth and Manchester Picadilly, from this evening and through Friday.

Martin Colmey, Operations Director for Network Rail Central route, said: “Our teams are working hard alongside our train operator partners to prepare the rail network for this weather.

“The safety of passengers and colleagues is our priority and a reduced timetable has been implemented so that we can continue to safely run trains for essential journeys. I would urge passengers to check before they travel as there will be disruption to services during the extreme weather.”

The latest weather forecast for the Banbury FM area shows rain falling here for the remainder of the day with sleety snow mixed in through the night, accompanied by strong winds.
