People are urged to donate to reputable charities if they wish to support the homeless

Be cautious when donating to beggars as they may be part of an organised crime group – that’s the warning from Cherwell District Council’s Community Safety Team.

They say that people have been appearing on the streets pretending to be homeless and begging for money.   Often they will have signs in front of them with messages such as “I am very hungry – God bless you”.   Mainly males have been spotted, but sometimes females are involved.

However, the individuals may be part of a well-known organised crime group which operates throughout the UK.

A spokesperson for the Community Safety Team said: “We urge people to donate money to a reputable charity if they wish to support the homeless.

“If you encounter a person presenting as homeless and begging, please consider this may not be genuine.  You can contact Police on 101 or the Community Safety team to report any concerns.”
