Luka Wallis examined the impact of social media on voting behaviour in America
A year 12 student from the Warriner School in Bloxham has come third in an international competition organised by the British Sociological Association.
Luka Wallis entered the ‘Young Sociologist of the Year’ competition, writing an essay on the impact of social media on voting behaviour in America.
The competition received 119 entries from students around the world. Four British Sociological Association members and two trustees acted as judges, reviewing the entries to create a short-list from which the top three were selected.
The judges noted particularly strong entries which had a coherent structure, were written in an engaging style, and offered novel insights into the topic, while utilising a clear theoretical lens.
Luka said: “It was great to be recognised for an essay on a topic which I think is ever more pertinent in the political climate of today.
“The transmission of misinformation on social media is a fundamental issue in modern politics, and analysing its impact from a sociological perspective is important in understanding its effect on voters.”
Rachel Campbell, Subject Leader for Sociology and EPQ, said: “It goes without saying I’m incredibly proud of Luka and the hard work he put into the project. He’s a very gifted young sociologist!”
