WHSmith name about to disappear as permission sought for branding change

15/07/2025

The name WHSmith has been part of British life for 233 years

The WHSmith name is set to disappear from Banbury town centre before the end of the summer.

The retailer, which has been part of British life since 1792, was sold to Hobbycraft owner Modella Capital back in March.

The new owners have now applied for planning permission to remove the WHSmith branding from their Banbury shop, replacing it with the new name TGJones.   This will appear at both the Market Place and Shopping Centre entrances.

WHSmith has been in the shopping centre since it was built in 1977.   Before that the retailer was based at the bottom of Banbury High Street in the building now occupied by Café Nero.
