The incident led to speculation on social media

A witness appeal has been launched after police received reports that a man was shouting racial abuse in Stanbridge Park on Bretch Hill in Banbury.

Following the incident, which happened at around 12.45pm last Monday (July 14), a 30-year-old man from the town was arrested on suspicion of public order, racially aggravated public order and resisting a constable in execution of duty.   He has been bailed until October 7, 2025.

Investigating officer PC James Oliver, based at Banbury police station, said: “I am appealing for anyone who witnessed this incident to please get in touch with Thames Valley Police.

“We will not tolerate racism or violence of this nature on our patch, and we are investigating this racially aggravated public order incident as a priority.

If you witnessed or have images or footage of this incident, please call 101 or make a report on our website, quoting reference number 43250353503.

“Alternatively, you can contact Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111 or via its website.”

The incident led to speculation on social media after firearms and public order trained specialist officers wearing protective clothing were sent to the scene.

A Thames Valley Police representative responded saying this was a tactic used to ensure the safety of the public, officers present and of course the subject himself.   They added: “The decision to mobilise such resources is based on the threat, risk and harm presented and is not one that is made lightly.

“To those commenting online that this is an over the top response please remember you do not know the full circumstances leading to these decisions being made.”
