Women’s tour elite cyclists set to return to Oxfordshire
25/03/2022
This year’s race will start in Chipping Norton
The 2022 Women’s Tour cycling race will be returning to Oxfordshire this summer. The final sixth stage of this year’s event will take place on Saturday June 11.
Chipping Norton has been chosen as the starting point with Oxford city centre hosting the elite cyclists as they cross the finish line. Full details of the route are yet to be revealed.
This will be the third time the race has visited the county as part of a three-year partnership between race organiser SweetSpot, Oxfordshire County Council, and the city and district councils.
Last year the first stage of the race was run between Bicester and Banbury. The event brought hundreds of onlookers to the towns, packing the streets to be part of the excitement. The influx provided a trade bonanza for shopkeepers, pubs and restaurants.
Councillor Andrew McHugh, Cherwell District Council’s Lead Member for Health and Wellbeing, said: “Last year’s Oxfordshire stage of the Women’s Tour was a truly remarkable day, drawing big crowds to Banbury and Bicester as local people and cycling fans gathered to support some of the world’s best athletes. We are big backers of the event as it returns to our county to entertain and inspire.”
