The Environment Agency says river levels will rise through the day
Rising river levels following a day of persistent rain have led to a flood alert being issued for the River Cherwell through Banbury.
Its only a month since flooding last affected our area, with the Mill Arts Centre theatre currently closed as a result.
The latest update from the Environment Agency warns that flooding of low lying land and roads is expected along the route of the river from Charwelton to just above Upper Heyford.
In the warning, which was issued at 8.40am today, they say that property flooding is not currently expected. However staff at the Mill Arts Centre have placed sandbags around the building. The car park under Lidl has also been closed.
The Environment Agency update said: “We expect river levels to rise through today. Our staff are in the area clearing trash screens.
“Avoid using low lying footpaths near local watercourses.”
Saturday’s Parkrun in Spiceball Park has been cancelled with parts of ther course already under water.
Banbury United’s pitch at Station Approach has once again been affected, leading to the postponement of Saturday’s scheduled game against Rushall Olympic. So far this season five games have been hit by a waterlogged pitch. The Puritans were due to be holding a fund-raising auction to support the club’s financial losses caused by previous cases of flooding. The auction will now take place after the next home game on February 24.

So the area likely to be flooded is all with in the expected, planned area, which is good news showing that the flood defences are working well.
