£1.26m for road safety improvements around RAF Barford St John

The Transport Secretary committed to a review of highway safety following the death of Harry Dunn
Approval has been given to accept a £1.26m grant from the government to improve highway safety around RAF Barford St John.
The cash has been made available following the tragic death of 19-year-old Harry Dunn from Charlton in August 2019 His motorbike collided with a vehicle driven on the wrong side of the road by US citizen Anne Sacoolas outside RAF Croughton.
The Transport Secretary subsequently committed to a review of highway safety around both RAF Croughton and RAF Barford St John.
A package of measures has now been agreed including new road markings, traffic signs and traffic calming, alongside enhanced maintenance, such as carriageway surfacing.
Andrew Gant, who’s Oxfordshire County Council’s Cabinet Member for Transport Management, agreed to the proposals this morning.
He said: “The government has made available money to look at road safety around bases used by United States visiting forces. This is basically … part of Oxfordshire’s allocation of those funds.
“It’s not one scheme, it’s lots of relatively small interventions around our Barford, Saint John.”
