Annual Parade falls victim to coronavirus precautions

Banbury’s annual parade for St George’s Day will not be happening this April as precautionary measures against the spread of coronavirus are stepped up. Banbury FM understands that a decision was taken to pull this year’s event at a meeting on Friday evening.

The march and church service is organised by the Cherwell Division of the Guide Association and usually attended by Brownies, Guides and Rainbows from the movement, together with members of the Scout Association. Last year’s parade was led by The Shires Youth Band. Young people usually parade from Broad Street, up the High Street and along Horsefair before attending a church service at St Mary’s. After the service the march back past a point where Banbury’s Town Mayor takes the salute.

The news comes as speculation grows that the government is planning to step up the response to the pandemic in the UK. The Prime Minister is due to chair an emergency COBRA meeting this morning before addressing the media.
