Council Kieron Mallon: “Sir Tom’s was a remarkable story and his legacy will live on”

Banbury Town Hall glowed blue on Tuesday night as a mark of respect to Captain Sir Tom Moore who passed away earlier that day.

The town hall Union Jack has been lowered to half-mast today as a further tribute.

Sir Tom, aged 100, died in Bedford Hospital of coronavirus. He had been suffering from pneumonia.

He became a household name last year when he raised more than £30m for the NHS by walking a hundred laps of his garden in Marston Moretaine, Bedfordshire.

His initial aim was to raise £1,000 for his local NHS but his exploits captured the imagination of the general public who swelled the fund to almost £33m.

Leader of Banbury Town Council Kieron Mallon said: “Sir Tom’s was a remarkable story and his legacy will live on. He demonstrated that no matter how old you are you can, with willpower and courage, do tremendous things.”
