Store says it has “unmissable discounts” in the final few days

Debenhams at the Castle Quay Shopping Centre will close for the final time next Wednesday – May 12.   The department store chain has announced the 49 stores that currently remain open, including Banbury, will shut for good next week.

The move signals the end of the Debenham’s brand 242 year presence on UK high streets.

Debenhams say they have “unmissable discounts” available in the final days of trading, with up to 80% off all fashion and home and up to 70% off beauty and fragrance products, while stocks last.

Debenhams arrived in Banbury as one of the major brands taking space in the expanded Castle Quay Shopping Centre after redevelopment work in the 1990s.   At the same time BHS also opened a local store and occupied the space which has now been transformed into Lock29.

Despite recent high profile big-store closures, Banbury has seen a renaissance amongst the small independent traders, particularly in the Old Town area.   Footfall in the period after lockdown restrictions lifted is reported as having been good.

Most recently shoppers flocked to the opening of The Range.   The national chain has taken over the old Matalan unit on the corner of George Street and Cherwell Street and opened their doors for the first time last week.
