Councillor Bernie Tiller took over as Town Mayor at an event on Saturday
Brackley’s new Town Mayor has selected an organisation dedicated to supporting the mental health and wellbeing of the town’s youngsters as his charity of the year during his time in office.
Bernie Tiller was robed up and wore the chains of office for the very first time at a ceremony on Saturday lunchtime, in the company of civic dignitaries and invited guests. During the event he announced “B Yourself” would be the focus of his fundraising endeavours.
Councillor Tiller told Banbury FM: “Many years ago … my old primary school teacher and a few other people started up one – if not the first – children’s charity where they would do counselling and talk to people. They understood how difficult being a youngster was.
“Then I found out that in Brackley we have got this wonderful charity … called B Yourself. They do mindfulness, going round all the local schools, talking to people.”
B Yourself focuses all its work on young people in Brackley, but includes within that those around the young people, including their teachers and parents. Councillor Tiller said: “So many parents are not ready for having children and raising a family. They’re willing to support the parents as well and that is wonderful.”
Councillor Tiller’s Mayoress will be his wife Kim. Councillor Jason Kew was appointed as the Deputy Mayor.
After the official event Councillor Tiller told Banbury FM he couldn’t quite believe he was now Town Mayor. He said: “I’m still trying to take the whole of the day in at the moment. I’m sure that later on today I will feel like the Mayor of Brackley!”
Already known for his work with many charities and organisations around the town, Councillor Tiller is hoping being the Mayor will enable support even more. He said: “Working with the various charities around the town is something I’ve always done, but now I can do it a little bit more, being the Mayor.”
He concluded: “I’m sure it’s going to be a great year.”
