“We hope that the message is clear … if you continue to commit offences you will be arrested and face consequences”

The number of problems caused by a small group of youths involved in anti-social behaviour in Banbury has been substantially reduced.

During a Community Forum held on Wednesday evening, Banbury’s Neighbourhood Policing Team reported the good news, which was as a result of the setting up of Operation Jankle – a special focus on addressing the problem.

People living in the Ruscote, Hardwick and Neithrop areas had become increasingly concerned about a group of youths who were involved in anti-social behaviour and criminality, particularly around the Bradley Arcade area.   The issue put pressure on police resources.

Operation Jankle focused mainly on 10 individuals who were causing the most issues in the area.  Officers worked with others, including Youth Services and the Cherwell District Council Community Safety Team, to address the problem.   Several children were arrested for criminal offences and a mixture of criminal prosecutions and restorative outcomes were applied.

Sergeant Sarah Nash led the operation.   She said: “I am proud of the commitment and determination of the team to help resolve this ongoing issue which was causing such concern to the community.

“Whilst it is not always our goal to criminalise children we do also ensure that support is put in place to help deter them from further offending and get them back on the straight and narrow. We could not do this without the support of the community and our partner agencies.

“The operation is still ongoing and we hope that the message is clear that if you continue to commit offences you will be arrested and face consequences for this.”
