The victim needed life-saving surgery
A Banbury man has been sent to prison for stabbing his friend after a petty argument between the two of them.
Eighteen-year-old Alex Luszczkiewicz, of Calthorpe Road, and the victim – a man who’s also eighteen – had been in People’s Park on August 4.
At just before midnight the victim was stabbed to the heart by Luszczkiewicz, sustaining severe and life-threatening injuries. He underwent life-saving surgery in hospital and is now making a slow recovery at home.
Initially Luszczkiewicz was charged with attempted murder but at Oxford Crown Court on September 30 the prosecution accepted an alternative guilty plea to section 18 grievous bodily harm and possession of a knife blade/sharp pointed object article in a public place.
On Friday Luszczkiewicz returned to court, where he was given an extended sentence of five years in custody and a further two years on licence. He was also made subject to a Serious Violence Reduction Order (SVRO) of two years, after he is released from prison. This will enable police to stop and search him in public spaces to see if he is carrying a bladed item or offensive weapon.
Investigating officer Detective Constable Shahed Ali, based at Banbury police station, said: “Luszczkiewicz pleaded guilty to a very serious offence and has now been sentenced for his violent actions that day.
“He was friends with the victim, and the stabbing came about as a result of a petty argument between the two of them, but his actions very nearly resulted in the death of his friend.
“It was only due to the excellent medical care that the victim survived and thankfully is now on the road to recovery.
“Knife crime devastates lives and we remain absolutely committed to removing these dangerous weapons from society.
“If you carry a knife, there is every chance you will use it and, as seen in this case, will cause very serious or even fatal injuries.
“Luszczkiewicz is solely responsible for causing these injuries. An escalation of an argument into something that potentially could have ended a life is a sobering reminder of the dangers of carrying knives.
“I hope that he will spend time reflecting on his violent actions that night, while he is in prison, and I would like to thank the victim for his support and courage in supporting this investigation.”
