Avis is described as “keeping the wheels of the organisation turning”
A volunteer at a Banbury organisation which helps those who find themselves lonely and isolated has been awarded a British Empire Medal in the King’s Birthday Honours.
Avis Gallager is the key person behind the Cornhill Companions, a branch of Royal Voluntary Service. Founded in 2017, Cornhill Companions provides older people who may not have seen another person socially for days with opportunities to meet others face-to-face.
Whilst under the Royal Voluntary Service umbrella, Cornhill Companions is actually a self-funded and volunteer led organisation with Avis the key person behind its operation.
She has over 20 years’ experience working with older people including roles as a residential social worker, managing Care Homes and organising care in the community.
Described as “keeping the wheels of the organisation turning”, Avis is also a befriender and matches volunteers with clients to ensure the perfect fit, allowing real friendships to develop.
Avis was awarded her British Empire Medal for services to the community in Banbury.
