The council’s housing service identifies and responds quickly to cases while prioritising the needs of survivors

Cherwell District Council has achieved bronze accreditation from the Domestic Abuse Housing Alliance (DAHA) after making significant improvements to services for victims of domestic abuse.

The recognition follows enhanced staff training, the creation of a network of domestic abuse champions and the introduction of a new Domestic Abuse Policy in 2025.

The Alliance praised the council’s housing service for identifying and responding quickly to cases whilst prioritising the needs of survivors.

The council employs a dedicated domestic abuse coordinator and offers practical support, including legal advice, housing assistance and home security measures such as video doorbells and lighting.

Councillor Ian Middleton, Portfolio Holder for Housing and Greener Communities, said: “The Domestic Abuse Housing Alliance is at the forefront of driving forward improvements in the way the UK housing sector recognises and responds to domestic abuse cases. The fact that we have now achieved their bronze accreditation, even in the face of increased demand for social housing and homeless presentations, is really significant.

“This accreditation should offer any domestic abuse survivor who needs our help the reassurance that we will handle their case with sympathy and expertise.”

Cherwell now aims to achieve a silver accreditation.
