Andy Burnham has received the support of Banbury MP Sean Woodcock to take over as the leader of the Labour party.
Over 80 percent of the Parliamentary Labour Party have now publicly backed Mr Burnham for the role. Without any other candidates coming forward he will take over as the party’s leader and the country’s Prime Minister a week on Monday.
So far 322 MPs have given their support through nomination to Mr Burnham, including several members of the current Cabinet.
Mr Woodcock said; “I’ve been very clear that I didn’t want Sir Keir Starmer to step down as Prime Minister.
“But now that he has, we need to look to the future and on that basis and in the absence of any other appropriate candidate I have nominated Andy Burnham.
“It is vital that we now build on the first two years in government and continue to deliver on the priorities of the people of Banbury, Chipping Norton, Charlbury and the North Oxfordshire villages.”
