Call for urgent action over potential contamination at Heyford Park

Tests have indicated high concentrations of PFAS in the Upper Heyford area
Concerns over possible land and water contamination at Upper Heyford have prompted Cherwell District Council to call for urgent government intervention.
The Leader of the Council, Councillor Lesley McLean has written to Water and Flooding Minister Emma Hardy requesting a meeting to discuss the issue of PFAS chemicals and the need for further testing in the area.
PFAS, or polyfluoroalkyl substances, are man-made chemicals that were widely used in industrial processes and firefighting foams. They are believed to have been used at the former RAF Upper Heyford site and have become the focus of growing concern because of their potential environmental and health impacts.
The council says tests have indicated high concentrations of PFAS in the Upper Heyford area and is urging government agencies to work together to assess any risks and determine what action may be required.
Councillor McLean said: “My priority is listening to the concerns of residents and doing everything I can to raise awareness of this emerging issue. I’m calling on all national and local agencies to pull together urgently to understand exactly what the health concerns are and agree what immediate actions are required to ensure this matter is properly understood.
“I hope Emma Hardy MP responds positively to my request for a meeting and can help bring about a comprehensive multi-agency response.”
Cherwell has also asked ministers to consider designating Heyford Park and the surrounding area as a priority monitoring site for PFAS in both soil and water.
The council has published information for residents on their website.
