Call to increase Community Wardens to tackle anti-social behaviour

A proposal to increase the number of Community Wardens across Cherwell District will be debated by councillors tonight.
The motion, put forward by Reform UK councillor Paul Jeffreys and seconded by Conservative councillor Eddie Reeves, calls on Cherwell District Council’s Executive to develop a policy for expanding the service to help tackle anti-social behaviour.
The motion argues that anti-social behaviour can have a significant impact on residents’ quality of life, mental health and sense of safety, particularly among older and more vulnerable people. It also suggests that investing in prevention could reduce the longer-term costs associated with crime and community decline.
According to the motion, employing four additional full-time Community Wardens would cost around £200,000 a year, while a volunteer scheme could be introduced for between £8,000 and £20,000 annually. It therefore suggests launching a volunteer “Special Community Warden” trial, modelled on the Special Constables scheme in the police.
If approved, the Executive would be asked to report back within six months with the costs, funding options and implementation plans for increasing the number of Community Wardens.
The idea will be considered by the full council at its meeting this evening.
