Cherwell by-election results – former Mayor takes Labour seat for Conservatives

Three seats on Cherwell District Council were decided following councillor resignations

Former Banbury mayor Fiaz Ahmed has won the Banbury Cross and Neithrop district council by-election for the Conservatives, taking the seat from Labour following the resignation of former councillor Matt Hodgson.

Mr Ahmed received 729 votes, with Labour’s Andrew Eaton 39 votes behind on 690.

By-elections took place on Thursday for three seats on Cherwell District Council.

Labour have retained the council seat vacated by Banbury’s Labour MP Sean Woodcock.   Henry Elugwu received 32.7 percent of the vote with 639 cast in his favour.   The result was close though, with Paul Austin for the Conservatives just 39 votes behind.

In Deddington the Conservatives retained the seat vacated by Andrew McHugh.   Zoe McLernon received 1,560 votes.   The Liberal Democrats were second with Nick Mylne gaining the support of 916 people.

Reform UK, who have performed well elsewhere in the country overnight, did not field candidates in any of the wards.

  • Elugwu, Henry – Labour Party – 639
  • Kwiatkowski, Karl Michael Kazimierz – Green Party – 207           
  • Parker-Manuel, Sophia – Liberal Democrats – 216         
  • Sargent, Paul Austin – Conservatives – 600

Turnout 27.64%

Deddington

  • Bliss, Aaron James- Green Party – 370 
  • McLernon, Zoe – Conservatives – 1560
  • Mylne, Nick – Liberal Democrats – 916 
  • Oldfield, Helen Margaret – Labour Party – 478  

Turnout 44.35%
