Clifton Santa Fun Spoiled By Thieves

Villagers upset after thefts from seasonal display

The community in Clifton has come together for the second year to create a display of Santas to add some seasonal joy for villagers and those passing through and visiting the village.   However, villagers’ good will has been tested during the last week after Santas within the display were stolen.   This has happened on two separate occasions.

Clifton resident Sandra told Banbury FM, “Some villages do scarecrows and a lady in our village decided it would be a good idea to do Santas instead.

“There was probably around 14 last year but there are loads more this year.   The men are getting involved and getting quite competitive!”

Those joining in with the festive fun decide on a design and then create their own Santa.   This year’s display includes a Santa on Skis, Santa in a hot air balloon, Santa shepherding sheep and a Santa with a speed camera.   Other designs include a Santa elephant and a Santa horse.

The first theft from the display occurred last week.   Sandra told us, “I did an elf with my Santa and last week that was stolen along with the wheelbarrow it was in.   Then last Sunday a Santa on a sledge was stolen – they took the Santa but left his sledge and boots.”

Sandra is upset that people would contemplate spoiling an idea designed to bring some pleasure at this time of year.  She said, “I think it’s really sad.   We’re making an effort – a bit of community spirit.   How low do people want to go”.
