Council debts up in West Northants but down in Cherwell

Across the country council debt is increasing
New figures show that West Northamptonshire Council’s debt rose by more than £90m over a twelve-month period up to the end of the last financial year.
Data from the Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government shows the council’s borrowing reached £679m by the end of 2024-25 – that’s up from £585m the year before.
The debt is equivalent to £1,564 per resident.
Across the country during the twelve months beleaguered councils added £7.8bn to their debt piles, with a combined £122.2bn now owed.
Cherwell District Council is one council to have bucked the trend, with a debt of £181m at the end of 2023-24, which reduced by £16m to £165m by the end of the 2024-25. Here the debt is equivalent to £992 per resident.
