Fees waived for VE Day anniversary street party road closures

08/04/2025

No charge will be made for events running between May 5 and May 11

May 8 marks the 80th anniversary of the end of the Second World War – known as Victory in Europe Day, or VE Day.

Back in 1945 celebrations broke out as the fighting came to an end after six years of war, with street parties held across the country.

To allow people to mark the 80th anniversary of VE Day Cherwell District Council is waiving the fees it normally charges for agreeing road closures.   Its hoped this will make it easier for people wanting to safely hold their own street parties.

The free road closures are available for VE Day events taking place between Monday May 5 and Sunday May 11.

The offer is expected to benefit parish councils and community groups.   Applications must be submitted at least 10 days in advance of the event.

Requests should be sent to E&[email protected] before the deadline of next Tuesday (April 15).
