Free breakfast clubs to open at two local schools

Steps to reduce the cost of uniform will also come into force
Free breakfast clubs are due to open at two local primary schools this September.
Children at Orchard Fields Community School and St Mary’s Church of England Primary School will be able to attend the new clubs from the start of next school year. They are amongst 1,400 schools joining the scheme, which its estimated will save parents up to £450 each year.
Alongside those schools already providing breakfast clubs, from September more than 2,700 clubs will be running across the country, with an estimated 680,000 children attending.
Best Start free breakfasts clubs are currently serving up over 10 million free breakfasts and five million hours of childcare, delivering cumulative savings of nearly £25million to families.
Meanwhile, new rules mean schools in Banbury and North Oxfordshire must now comply with legal limits on the number of branded uniform items they require as part of their uniform. The move aims to ensure parents can buy more of the everyday basics such as trousers and shirts from any shop or supermarket, rather than a dedicated supplier where costs can often be higher.
Education Secretary Bridget Phillipson said: “No parent should have to choose between a summer day out to the beach and kitting their child out for school.
“From September, families will feel the difference at the school gates: free breakfast clubs at 1,400 more schools, an end to expensive lists of branded uniform, and more free lunches for those who need them.”
Banbury MP Sean Woodcock welcomed the news. He said: “I’ve been working hard with the Labour government to get Best Start free breakfast clubs into Banbury’s schools and I’m really pleased to be delivering on this, with Orchard Fields Community School and St Mary’s Church of England Primary School, Banbury set to have free breakfast clubs from September.
“This expansion secures savings for local families when they need it most and will mean every child, no matter their background, can feel the benefits of a nutritious breakfast before school.
“Alongside welcome action on the cost of school uniform, Labour is cutting the cost of getting children into school so they can get the brilliant education they deserve.”
