Orinoco is holding a 5-day 50 percent off everything sale

A Banbury charity shop with a difference has reached a heavyweight milestone four years after opening their doors.

Orinoco, The Oxfordshire Scrapstore, has diverted 50 tonnes of materials away from landfill – the same weight at 15 hippos!

The concept for the store was born around 30 years ago with the idea of taking excess materials from factories to use for children’s crafting.   Having operated in Oxford for a number of years, Orinoco opened in Banbury for the first time in 2021.   They are now based in the old Post Office building at 57-58 High Street.

Manager Lisa Hawtin said: “If you remember the Wombles from the 70s, we’re encouraging people to be Wombles and make good use of stuff that other people would throw out.   It’s about encouraging creativity through the reuse of stuff.

“We are a registered charity, but we’re different to a charity shop.   We’ve got tools, craft items, decorating items – slightly different to your average charity shop.”

As well as the shop they also facilitate activities for local groups including children’s crafting parties, crafting sessions for youth groups and other community outreach activities.

To celebrate the recycling milestone Orinoco is holding a 5-day 50 percent off everything sale, running until the Easter weekend.
