High Streets across the country are facing challenges

What should be done to enhance and improve Brackley High Street?

In the face of high streets across the UK facing a variety of challenges, decision makers want to know the views of both residents and visitors.

West Northamptonshire Council describes Brackley a unique market town based on a proud heritage, boasting independent businesses, boutique shops, quaint eateries and more.   Through a consultation which has just been launched they want to establish a vision for building on Brackley’s strengths to enhance the community and sustainably grow the economy.

A number of suggestions are given as starting points for discussion.   These include an improved marketing strategy, encouraging the leasing of empty premises and attracting more independent businesses to relocate to or open additional branches in Brackley.

Music, pavement dining and activities for families are suggested as ideas to enhance town centre events, alongside additional markets to attract people to the town.

A Town Gift Card or loyalty scheme could also be used to encourage people to spend locally.

Councillor Daniel Lister, Cabinet Member for Economic Development, Town Centre Regeneration & Growth, said: “Brackley is one of the gems in West Northamptonshire’s crown and I encourage everyone in the County and beyond to take part in this idea gathering exercise and help us to shape, develop and prioritise projects and adapt the high street experience to meet the needs of the local community and visitors.”

The survey runs until midnight on Sunday, 26 May.

A separate consultation on a Local Cycling and Walking Infrastructure Plan for Brackley recently concluded.   This included a number of suggestions which would affect Brackley High Street, such as attempting to create a safer walking and cycling environment by removing the right turn box for vehicles from the Banbury Road into the Market Place, pedestrianising some of the Market Place car park and considering charging for the remaining spaces.

How about turning the parkland (adjacent to the Old Fire Station) into gardens, now that the beer festival has been re-housed?

Removing the right turn from Banbury Rd would be a disaster, you can hardly drive down the Banbury Rd for parked vehicles! Need a 1 way system up Manor Rd to the school. If you do away with free parking that will kill the remaining shops. Think a youth club for teens & indoor play area for tots are needed. We have either got or had most other small shops.
