JDE Peet proposing full closure of Banbury site

Following the closure of the production side 134 people were retained in packing

The final JDE Peet operation in Banbury looks likely to close, bringing to an end use of the coffee factory site on Ruscote Avenue.

The end of production at the factory was announced in November 2023.   At the time 280 roles in production and research and development areas were lost.   A further 167 people were retained for a specialist coffee packing facility.

Those remaining Banbury staff were called to a meeting in Bicester this morning when they were informed a consultation on the proposed closure was beginning.

A JDE Peet’s spokesperson told Banbury FM: “We have today announced a proposal to close our entire site in Banbury. This was not an easy decision to take, and our priority now is with our associates and supporting them throughout the consultation process.

“Since we announced the closure of coffee processing at Banbury in 2023, we have conducted a comprehensive review into what it would take for Banbury to operate as a best-in-class packing facility.

“Through this review, we have found that Banbury requires significantly more investment than was previously anticipated to maintain its infrastructure which is not financially viable for the company.

“We are proud to have manufactured and packed coffee in Banbury for almost 60 years and would like to thank the local community for their valued support. Most importantly, we want to acknowledge and thank everyone who has worked at the factory over the past six decades.”

Should the proposal go head it is anticipated the site will have closed completely by December 2026. Coffee packed in Banbury would be relocated within JDE Peet’s European network.
