Kerbside glass collection boosts recycling rates

Glass has been allowed in blue recycling bins since January

Household recycling levels in north Oxfordshire have risen following the introduction of a new kerbside glass collection service.

Cherwell District Council launched the scheme in January, allowing glass to be included in blue recycling bins, in line with updated recycling regulations.

Figures from the first three months of operation show a marked increase in recycling, with 392 additional tonnes of dry recyclables collected compared with the same period in 2025.

Collected glass is taken to a specialist facility where it is separated from other materials. Larger pieces are sorted by colour for reprocessing, while smaller fragments are reused in applications such as road aggregate or industrial materials.

The early success of the scheme is expected to contribute positively to the council’s recycling figures for 2025/26, due to be published next year.
