Labour launches manifesto for local elections on May 4

Genuinely affordable homes, a tenant’s charter and creating dynamic town centres are included in the proposals

Ahead of the local elections at the start of May the Labour party has announced its manifesto for the Cherwell District.

Their seven priority areas include delivering more genuinely affordable homes for local people to rent or buy and tackling the 50% of homes in the Cherwell District which have an energy efficiency rating of below average.

Should Labour take control of the District their version of a Tenant’s Charter would make a return, aiming to improve standards in rented accommodation.  The controlling Conservatives at Cherwell recently amended Labour’s proposals for a Tenant’s Charter, which Councillor Sean Woodcock, Leader of the Labour Group described as “watered down” and unrecognisable from the original proposal.

Other manifesto policies include action to address the climate emergency, putting mental health and tackling loneliness at the heart of what the Council does and focusing investment into creating dynamic town centres.

They are also proposing to clean up our estates with zero-tolerance to fly-tipping.

Councillor Woodcock described Cherwell as a great place to live but feels in the face of the cost-of-living crisis people need a Council that is on their side and careful with their money.

He said: “This election really matters.  Labour are on your side. That’s why our councillors spend all year knocking on doors listening to your concerns. We speak out in the chamber about your priorities. And we drive the agenda with action on warm spaces, the cost of living, food poverty, housing and the environment.

“Labour want to make our streets safer. The Conservatives want to cut town centre CCTV. Labour want cleaner estates. The Conservatives are charging you to empty your brown bins. Labour want more decent, affordable housing. The Conservatives want unfettered development and to protect the interests of landlords instead of tenants.

“The Conservatives have stopped listening and are out of touch. Their councillors sit silently at meetings because they’re out of ideas after twenty years running the council. The result is that you now pay more while receiving less.

“Only Labour is offering the leadership that this district deserves. Labour will deliver a cleaner, greener future.”
