He was also the mayor from 2024-25

Councillor Mark Cherry is once again wearing the chains of office, having last night taken over from Councillor Kieron Mallon as Banbury’s Town Mayor.

Its Councillor Cherry’s second time as mayor – he held the role just before Councillor Mallon’s tenure, back in 2024.

The deputy mayor is Councillor Henry Elugwu.   Both were nominated by the Labour group at Banbury Town Council.

In the past it has often been the case that the previous year’s Deputy Town Mayor has stepped up to the role of Town Mayor, with the Conservatives and Labour taking alternate years.   Last year’s deputy was Councillor Chukwudi Okeke who was a member of the Labour group at the time, but subsequently moved to the Conservatives during the year.

Last night the Conservatives didn’t make any nominations with Councillor Mallon telling the Annual Meeting: “We try to keep politics (with a big ‘P’) outside the door – for that reason the Conservative group will not be putting forward a nomination.”
