MP calls for County Council to use new powers to “get a grip” on bus services

Sean Woodcock says we’ve been let down by unaccountable private bus operators
New legislation is about to be introduced in parliament to make it easier for local authorities to hold private bus operators to account and improve service quality locally.
As that work begins Banbury’s MP has written to Oxfordshire County Council to find out if they plan to use the powers. Sean Woodcock asks if the council plan to use them to “get a grip on bus services across Banbury and Oxfordshire”.
The legislation would grant local transport authorities greater control over the routes, fares and service levels of bus services, with private operators bidding for contracts to operate franchises.
Mr Woodcock said: “For too long, my constituents have been let down by unaccountable private bus operators. I am delighted that the Labour Government understands the importance of local bus networks, but we will only see improvements if Oxfordshire County Council choose to adopt these new powers.
“I urge Oxfordshire County Council to seriously consider what steps are available to them, and I look forward to their response.”
A spokesperson for Oxfordshire County Council told Banbury FM: “In November 2024, Oxfordshire County Council commissioned a study into bus franchising in the county, including an examination of bus regulation and ownership possibilities.
“Recommendations are expected to be put before cabinet later this year.”
