Sean Woodcock noted the stories of poor care some Banbury mothers had experienced
Banbury’s MP Sean Woodcock has welcomed yesterday’s announcement that the government has launched a national investigation into NHS maternity services following a series of maternity scandals.
Mr Woodcock noted the stories of poor care Banbury mothers had experienced, as highlighted by the work of the Keep The Horton General group – something he had made the Health Secretary Wes Streeting aware of soon after coming into office.
In Mr Streeting’s announcement he referenced appalling scandals regarding care, safety, culture and oversight in maternity centres.
In September, the Care Quality Commission’s National Review of Maternity Services in England found that almost half of all Trusts were rated as ‘requiring improvement’ on safety, another 18 percent were rated as “inadequate” and there was a widespread lack of staff and in some places a lack of potentially life-saving equipment. The report also found that some services don’t even record incidents that have resulted in serious harm.
The national investigation will investigate the trusts which are of the greatest concern as a starting point. This will be followed by a ‘system-wide’ look at maternity and neonatal care, creating a clear set of actions to improve national NHS care.
Sean Woodcock said: “I welcome the announcement that there will be a national investigation into Maternity Care.
“Mothers in Banbury are very familiar with stories of poor care thanks to the work of Keep The Horton General, stories that I put on the desk of the Secretary of State within weeks of being elected.
“I am hopeful that this is the start of a process which leads to better outcomes for new mums and babies in our area and across the UK.”
