A comprehensive package of reforms to stop young people falling into crime and to break the cycle of offending has been welcomed by Banbury’s MP.

Sean Woodcock said the new Youth Justice White Paper will see earlier interventions, cut reoffending and keep Banbury and North Oxfordshire safe.

Announced yesterday, the reforms are part of the government’s plans to cut crime, including halving knife crime over a decade, and deliver safe streets.

The announcement comes as figures show eight in ten prolific offenders first committed a crime as a child, highlighting the need for earlier and more effective intervention.

Under the plans, more children at risk of offending will receive targeted support earlier through expanded prevention programmes, helping steer them away from crime before it escalates.

Mr Woodcock said: “Too many young people are being drawn into crime, with devastating consequences for victims, communities and their own futures.

“I welcome this action to create safer streets in Banbury and North Oxfordshire as part of Labour’s plan to cut crime and ensure more young people get the support they need to turn their lives around.”
