A team at the Horton General Hospital was one of the winners at the Oxford University Hospitals Staff Recognition Awards last Thursday (June 18).

The Oak High Care Unit was personally selected by CEO Simon Crowther for the CEO’s Award, for the work they have undertaken in establishing a local pleural service at the Horton, reducing delays, transfers and prolonged admissions for patients.

By embracing new ways of working, adapting ward processes and collaborating closely with respiratory and radiology colleagues, the award recognises how the team have helped to create a safe, sustainable service within a busy environment.

In naming the unit as the winner it was noted: “Their openness to feedback has improved comfort, privacy and communication for patients and families, while their flexibility and shared ownership have strengthened patient flow and coordination across services.   This is a powerful example of frontline staff driving meaningful improvement.”

They received their award as members of staff, volunteers, and their nominators joined together for the awards ceremony, which was held at the John Radcliffe Hospital.

The Staff Recognition Awards are judged based on the Trust’s values of excellence, compassion, improvement, learning, respect and delivery.   Other awards included Sustainability, Oxford Hospitals Charity Supporter or Volunteer of the Year, a Patients’ Choice Award and, for the first time, a Rising Star Award for staff members under 30 years old.

More than 1,900 nominations were received for this year’s awards.
