Oxfordshire top for green waste credentials, but Cherwell lags behind other districts

17/04/2026

292,738 tonnes of waste was produced in 2024 to 2025

For the 12th year in a row people living in Oxfordshire have been named as the best in the country for recycling, reusing and composting – that’s according to the latest government figures.

During 2024 to 2025 across the county 56.6 percent of household waste was recycled, reused or composted, helping Oxfordshire County Council retain the drown of top performing waste disposal authority.

Of district councils in Oxfordshire its not such a great story in the Cherwell district where the council rates 37th out of 197 across the country with a recycle, reuse and compost level of 51.5 percent.   That’s lower than South Oxfordshire, Vale of White Horse and West Oxfordshire District Councils.

The total amount of household waste produced during the period in Oxfordshire was 292,738 tonnes – 165,694 tonnes of that was reused, recycled and composted.
