Banbury’s MP Sean Woodcock wishes the Prime Minister had been given more time to turn things round.

A tearful Sir Keir Starmer resigned outside 10 Downing Street shortly after 9.30am today, saying had been asking whether he’s best placed to lead Labour into the next general election, and added: “I have heard the answer”.

Following the announcement Mr Woodcock said: “I think it is sad that within the first two years of a five year term it has come to this and it isn’t what anyone hoped or voted for in July 2024.

“I thought and still think Keir Starmer should’ve been given more time to turn things around, certainly as the signs are that change is happening. From the outset Keir has been clear that repairing and rebuilding Britain was not going to happen overnight.”

During his announcement Sir Keir said he had informed the King of his decision and would remain in post until a new Labour leader was appointed.

Mr Woodcock sought to reassure local people: “I remain the same Labour MP my constituents elected and will continue to do everything I can to improve the lives of the people of Banbury, Chipping Norton and the North Oxfordshire Villages.

“We promised to end chaos and instability and I struggle to see how changing leaders delivers on that promise.

“While I believe that changing leader like this is a mistake, obviously I want any new Labour leadership team to succeed and I sincerely hope that they do.

“The price of failure will be hardship and pain for hard working families across the UK and the increased probability of a Reform led government at next general election.”
