Proposal for extra street and deep cleaning to improve Banbury town centre

If approved a trial could begin in September

A trial scheme to improve the appearance of Banbury town centre could see extra weekend street cleaning and regular deep-clean events introduced from September.

The proposal, outlined in a business case prepared for Cherwell District Council’s Executive, forms the first phase of a wider Banbury Town Centre Revitalisation programme aimed at creating a cleaner, more attractive town centre and boosting visitor numbers.

Under the preferred option, existing street cleansing staff would work additional hours on Saturdays and Sundays, while quarterly deep-clean operations would tackle built-up grime in busy areas of the town centre.   The trial would run from this September until next March at a cost of £21,500.

Council officers say the scheme could lead to cleaner streets, reduced litter, a more positive perception of the town centre among residents, visitors and businesses, and potentially increased footfall and visitor dwell time.

The trial would be paid for through Local Area Development Funding, with the council estimating a full-year programme would cost approximately £38,500.

If approved, the project would be monitored by the council’s Executive and the Area Oversight Group, who came up with the idea at their most recent meeting, attended by representatives from Stagecoach, Castle Quay Shopping Centre, Banbury Town Council, the Mill Arts Centre, Banbury Quays Consortium, Banbury Civic Society and Banbury Community Action Group.

The council’s Executive will consider the proposal next week.
