Record COVID infections locally but hospital cases fairly stable

A 50 per cent increase in new infections has eclipsed the pandemic’s second wave high at the start of 2021
Covid infection rates in the Banbury FM area hit record levels in the week between Christmas and the New Year. In the seven days up to New Year’s Eve 1,613 tested positive for the virus in Banbury, Brackley and the surrounding villages.
The number represents a 50 per cent increase in new infections in a week and eclipses the pandemic’s second wave high of 994 at the start of 2021.
Up to December 28 Oxford University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust reported 56 people in their hospitals with COVID, three of which were in critical care. These figures have only risen slightly in the last few weeks.
In Banbury, Grimsbury reported the most new infections at 218, with a 749 positive tests across the whole of the town.
Brackley saw 254 new infections with Bodicote, Adderbury and Bloxham reporting the most in the villages at 245.
On Wednesday Prime Minister Boris Johnson told parliament that Plan B rules will continue for now, with current Covid measures being reviewed again by January 26.
Walk-in COVID vaccination slots continue to be available again today at both Banbury Town Hall and Brackley Methodist Church.
