Reported shop-lifting cases up in the Cherwell district
12/03/2025

It is now a focus area for Thames Valley Police
There were 1,686 cases of shoplifting in the Cherwell District reported to the police in the twelve months up to the end of January this year – an increase of 24.9 percent on the previous year.
A proportion of the increase is attributed to the force actively encouraging shop owners to report crimes.
Just under one third of the reported cases were solved (29.8 percent), but that is an improvement of 9.8 percent on the previous year.
The figures were given during a presentation by Thames Valley Police’s Chief Constable, Jason Hogg at a meeting of Cherwell District Council’s Overview and Scrutiny Committee last night.
Chief Inspector Hogg said: “[Police officers] are focusing a lot more on shoplifting. Where the shops are is in a lot of places in the centre of our communities.
“We’re identifying 80 offenders a month using facial recognition technology as well, which is working really, really well.”
General reported crime figures stood at 11,365 cases for the same period, with just 16.6 percent of those cases solved.
