The order gives police additional stop and search powers

A Section 60 order covering part of Banbury has been extended for another 24 hours.   The order will now run until 5pm on Sunday.

It came into force following an incident on Friday afternoon at around 2.19pm, when a group of people were involved in a public disorder incident on Orchard Way, outside a barber shop.

Three 17-year-old boys, a 15-year-old boy, and four men, aged 19, 23, 24 and 25 were initially arrested on suspicion of affray and then further arrested on suspicion of violent disorder. They are all from Banbury and have since been released on police bail.

One of the 17-year-old boys was arrested on suspicion of possessing an offensive weapon.

Three people – a 15-year-old boy, a 17-year-old boy and a 35-year-old woman – sustained injuries and required hospital treatment, but have since been discharged.

The Section 60 order allows police officers greater powers to stop and search people in the area as they work to prevent further violence.

Detective Inspector James Holden-White, based at Banbury police station, said: “I understand that an order of this nature could cause concern, but while it may sound alarming, enhancing our stop and search powers provides us with another tactic to quickly identify and disrupt those carrying weapons.

“If you are stopped by an officer, please do not be worried as this does not mean that you are in trouble.

“You will see more police officers in the area while the order is in place and we expect to carry out more stop and searches than usual.

“Officers who are out and about are there to reassure you as well as using their powers under Section 60 so please do stop and speak with them about any concerns that you have.

“We continue to appeal for any witnesses or anyone with information relating to the disorder to please come forward.

“Please either call 101 or make a report on our website, quoting reference number 43250201394.

“If you have footage of the incident, please do not share it online, instead upload it to the dedicated portal for this investigation.

“Alternatively, you can provide information anonymously to independent charity Crimestoppers by calling 0800 555 111 or via its website.”
