Three people needed hospital treatment after the incident

A section 60 order has been put in place for an area of Banbury where an incident earlier this afternoon (Friday) left three people needing hospital treatment and saw eight people arrested.

The incident, at around 2.19pm, saw a group of people involved in a public disorder incident on Orchard Way, outside a barber shop.

The section 60 order came into force at 5pm to prevent further violence.   The area covered is shown on the above map.   It will remain in force until 5pm on Saturday evening.  It allows officers the power to stop and search anyone in the designated area.

Following this afternoon’s incident three 17-year-old boys, a 15-year-old boy, a 19-year-old man, a 23-year-old man, a 24-year-old man and a 25-year-old man have been arrested on suspicion of affray.    They are all from Banbury.

One of the 17-year-old boys has also been arrested on suspicion of possessing an offensive weapon.

Three people sustained injuries and required hospital treatment: a 15-year-old boy, a 17-year-old boy and a 35-year-old woman.

Detective Inspector James Holden-White, based at Banbury police station, said: “We understand this disorder may be concerning for the community but we do not believe there is any threat to the wider public.

“We have put a Section 60 order in place and increased patrols in the area and will continue to investigate the incident as a priority, making eight arrests so far.

“I am appealing for any witnesses, anyone with information relating to the disorder to please come forward.

“Please either call 101 or make a report on our website, quoting reference number 43250201394.

“If you have footage of the incident, please do not share it online, instead upload it to the dedicated portal for this investigation.

“Alternatively, you can provide information anonymously to independent charity Crimestoppers by calling 0800 555 111 or via its website.

“The Section 60 order will give our officers extra powers to carry out stop and search activity, and has been enacted for the safety of the public.

“These are emergency powers and the threshold to implement them is very high, however we are using them to keep our communities safe.

“If you are stopped by an officer, please do not be worried as this does not mean that you are in trouble.

“If you are in the area and have any concerns, you can speak to any of our uniformed officers.”
