Spiceball Park pond transformation will help wildlife thrive

The pond will fill and drain naturally
A group of volunteers have transformed a pond in Spiceball Park to benefit a wealth of wildlife.
The area is now home to ten new species of waterside plants, with a diverse meadow flower seed mix spread across the surrounding area.
Its hoped the pond will encourage frogs, toads, newts, dragonflies and pond skaters, along with a whole host of other aquatic insects. Birds and hedgehogs are amongst the other species which will also benefit from the additional water source.
A willow tree which sits alongside the River Cherwell recently underwent extensive pollarding – a form of tree management which involves cutting back the branches to encourage healthy regrowth.
Wood from the tree was used to construct a natural woven fence by the pond.
As the weather change the pond will fill and drain naturally, collecting rainfall without the need to take water from the nearby River Cherwell.
The project was made possible thanks to a grant from Cherwell District Council’s UK Shared Prosperity Fund allocation.
