The indoor bowls hall will be transformed into a dedicated purpose-built theatre

A full professional pop-up theatre is going to be created at the Woodgreen Leisure Centre so the shows can go on whilst the theatre at The Mill is out of use.

The Leisure Centre’s indoor bowls hall will be transformed into a dedicated purpose-built space where live performances can take place, complete with professional staging, sound and lighting, an extensive bar offer and free onsite parking.

Last week it was announced that work to repair the theatre at the Mill Arts Centre was likely to take until the end of June.    Flooding around The Mill at the start of the year led to damage requiring extensive work to not only fix damage to the auditorium floor but also to future-proof against the issue happening again.

The new pop-up theatre at Woodgreen Leisure Centre will be operational from April 25 until June 30.

The Mill Arts Centre team have expressed their gratitude to the Leisure Centre team and Cherwell District Council for facilitating the temporary solution.   It is expected that the vast majority of The Mill’s programme of live events will be transferred to the pop-up theatre.

The Mill’s Box Office team will be contacting ticket holders to confirm the arrangements for individual performances.

Currently all events from July 1 onwards are scheduled to take place at The Mill.

Emma Hiorns, Creative Director at The Mill Arts Centre, said: “We are enormously grateful for the patience and support of our audiences whilst our team are undertaking the mammoth task of creating a full professional pop-up theatre in Woodgreen Leisure Centre.

“Our auditorium may be temporarily out of action, but we are thrilled to be able to go ahead with as many performances as possible at The Mill at Woodgreen and keep bringing world-class live performance to Banbury.

“Furthermore we are working closely with our landlords to ensure that we have the auditorium back up and running so we can welcome audiences back through our doors and enjoying live performance at The Mill again just as soon as possible.”

The Mill Arts Centre building is owned by Oxfordshire County Council, whose insurers are progressing the repairs.

Its hoped people will continue to support the Mill by booking tickets for a performance, becoming a Member, making a donation, booking a place on a creative class or workshop, or visiting the Café Bar between 9.30am and 4.30pm Monday-Saturday.
