Think before buying an e-scooter or e-bike this Christmas

If they are used illegally they might be seized and destroyed
With Christmas approaching, Thames Valley Police is reminding people to check the law before buying or gifting an e-scooter or e-bike this year.
Privately owned e-scooters are classed as motor vehicles, meaning they require insurance, tax, registration, and a valid licence. As insurance for private e-scooters isn’t available, using them on public roads, pavements, or parks is illegal. Police may seize and destroy any e-scooter being used illegally.
The rules around E-bikes – known as Electrically Assisted Pedal Cycles – state they are only legal if they have pedals, a maximum 250-watt motor and cut-off at a maximum speed of 15.5mph.
They must also display key manufacturer details and riders have to be 14 or older.
Non-compliant e-bikes are treated as motorbikes and must be registered, insured, and licensed, with the rider wearing a helmet.
A spokesperson for Thames Valley Police said: “We know that e-scooters and e-bikes can be a big investment, and we want to help you avoid spending your money on something that could end up being seized and disposed of if the law isn’t followed.”
