Two firefighters and a member of the public lost their lives during a major fire at Bicester Motion last night.

Ten fire crews attended the incident having been called to the scene at 6:39pm.   Four crews remain at the scene this morning.   The fire is now under control.

The two firefighters lost their lives whilst dealing with the incident.   Two further firefighters sustained serious injuries and are currently in hospital.

A member of the public also sadly died in the incident.

Chief Fire Officer Rob MacDougall said: “It is with a very heavy heart that we today report the loss of two of our firefighters. Families have been informed and are being supported. Our thoughts are with them at this most difficult of times and we ask for privacy to be respected.

“We cannot release any details at present but will provide further information as soon as we can.”

The fire is still ongoing but is now under control.   Support appliances also remain at the scene including a hydraulic platform, a water carrier, a command unit and a high volume pumping unit.

On Thursday evening witnesses reported explosions and clouds of dense black smoke which could be seen for miles following the blaze at the former RAF base.   People were advised to stay inside, but that instruction has now been lifted.

In a statement this morning a spokesperson for Bicester Motion said: “We are deeply saddened to share the tragic news that two firefighters and a close friend of the site have lost their lives. There are no words at times like this, but our thoughts and prayers are with their families and loved ones.

“We pray for the two firefighters in hospital. The bravery shown by the emergency services teams has been overwhelming. We are grateful for all the support and especially the exceptional work by all in such unprecedented circumstances.

“The strength and kindness of the Bicester community, of which we are proud members, has truly shown itself. The site will remain closed over the weekend as we continue to work closely with the emergency services. Thank you for your understanding at this time.”

Following the news Prime Minister Sir Kier Starmer wrote on X: “Devastating news. My thoughts are with their families and friends. The bravery of our firefighters is astounding. Hoping those in hospital make a full and swift recovery.”

Banbury’s MP, Sean Woodcock, said: “My sincere condolences to the family, friends and colleagues of the two fire fighters who have sadly lost their lives in this incident. I would also like to send my condolences to the family and friends of the member of the public who has also sadly passed away. My thoughts are with them at this difficult time.”
