The hospice is often described as a place filled with compassion, positivity and kindness

Some 490 people have volunteered more than 33,500 hours of their time to help the Katharine House Hospice during the past year.

This week is Volunteers’ Week and the Hospice is celebrating the contribution of those people whose dedication helps support patients and families in our local community.

The collective donation is the equivalent of 894 full-time working weeks.

One volunteer recently marked an extraordinary 40 years of service alongside her 90th birthday!

Volunteers play a vital role across many areas of the hospice, including at its charity shops and fundraising events, with patient transport services and bereavement support, and covering reception and inpatient wards.

Jill Hill leads the hospice’s Voluntary Services team.   She said: “One of the most enjoyable parts of my role is getting to know the fantastic volunteers who give so much of their time to support us. Many people come to us with certain preconceptions about hospice volunteering, but those ideas are often quickly dispelled once they experience the warmth and positivity of our hospice community.”

It’s a common misconception that volunteering involves being surrounded by sadness, however volunteers often describe the hospice as a place filled with compassion, positivity and kindness.

Katharine House is encouraging anyone who has considered volunteering to find out more, pointing out that in giving just a little of your time, you could make a real difference to local people when they need it most.
