Warning to take care as fire severity index remains at “very high”
09/07/2026

Highs of 33 Celsius are expected in Banbury and Brackley today
Oxfordshire Fire and Rescue Service is urging people to take extra care outdoors as the national fire severity index remains at “very high” across the county.
The service says the current hot and dry conditions mean fires can start very easily and is asking people to dispose of cigarettes responsibly, avoid using disposable barbecues except in designated areas, and never leave campfires unattended.
It is also reminding people to take litter home or use bins, particularly glass bottles, which can intensify the sun’s rays and increase the risk of fires.
The warning comes as much of the county continues to experience prolonged warm weather with highs of 33 Celsius locally today.
