Staff and pupils at Hanwell Fields Community School raised an amazing £8,361 for the Katharine House Hospice by taking part in this year’s school’s Santa Fun Run.   430 adults and children from the school completed the challenge on Friday December 4th.

A 350 metre track was set up through the school’s playground and youngsters from the various classes took up the challenge to do as many laps as they could.   Most managed at least 6 or 7 laps.

Rebecca Lister, the Aspirations Leader at Hanwell Fields Community School, told us the children were keen to get involved.   She said: “We played them a clip of where the money would be going to at Katharine House.   Very quickly, with our school being such a community based school, they were keen to get on board and to be able to help.”

The school set up a JustGiving page and friends and families were encouraged to sponsor the children taking part.

Rebecca said: “You should have seen their happy little faces.   Katharine House very kindly gave every child a santa hat.   They came dressed in red tops and trousers and they had these santa hats and you could see them running around.

“We had the amazing sports leaders to help and encourage the children.   If they were getting tired they walked a little bit.   The sports leaders encouraged them to run a little bit, to jog a little bit.   Everyone just helped each other out and it was definitely a fun day we had.”

As the school is unable to hold an assembly at the moment a short video message was recorded to tell the youngsters how much they had raised.   This was played out to each class with the children jumping and clapping with joy on hearing the news.

Rebecca said: “You could hear it all around the school.   It was wonderful.   I’ve asked Katharine House to let us know when they do the next one as this is definitely something we’ll be keen to do.”

19 schools took part in the school’s Santa Fun Run this year.   The total amount raised by schools so far is £13,500 of which Hanwell Fields Community School has raised the most.

Rebecca is very proud of the achievement.   She said: “It’s incredible.  We’re so, so lucky to have such a wonderful community and our friends and families just got behind us.”
