Brackley In The Mood for lighting the town’s VE Day beacon

The beacon was lit at 9.30pm after an evening of songs from the VE Day era

People were In The Mood for a celebration in Brackley’s Town Park at the end of a day marking the 80th anniversary of VE Day on Thursday.

The Cherry Belles performed a number of popular songs from the era and were joined by Brackley’s Glee Choir for a rousing rendition of the Vera Lynn classic “We’ll Meet Again”.

Town Mayor Mrs Elaine Wiltshire, in one of her last duties in the role, led the beacon lighting ceremony.   The Town’s uniformed organisations formed up and joined the public singing the hymn “I Vow To Thee My Country”.

At 9.30pm Brackley’s beacon was lit, coordinated with other beacons across the country.the People’s Park War Memorial.

Earlier in the day school choirs from Bracken Leas, Radstone, and Brackley Junior schools had performed.

The 80th anniversary of VE Day started at 9am in Brackley when the VE Day Union Flag was raised and a proclamation read out.
